37HS tempering steel – application, processing, properties
Grade 37HS is used in the construction of heavy and medium-sized machinery, for screws, journals, shafts, axles, and other parts subject to torsional stress, as well as for small parts in automotive and tractor construction subject to high alternating loads. It is also used for parts subject to high wear, such as cams, guide rods, clutch discs, friction discs, and even the intake valves of some tractors. After low tempering, 37HS steel can also be used for spring-loaded parts requiring high strength and wear resistance.
Welding 37HS
37HS steel has poor weldability. Welding is only possible in exceptional cases, preferably after soft annealing. Before welding, the steel should be heated to temperatures depending on the thickness of the parts being joined.
Preheating temperature (°C) at thickness
-up to 15 mm 150-250oC
-over 15 to 25 mm 200-300oC
-over 25 mm 250-350oC
Lower temperatures can be used when welding steels with C e min values and thicknesses at the lower end of the ranges, and at high welding currents. When welding large or thicker parts, it is recommended to use an intermediate stress-relieving anneal. Immediately after welding and before cooling below the specified temperatures, it is recommended to soft-anneal or heat-treat the joint.
If heat treatment cannot be performed immediately after welding, the joint should be cooled very slowly to ambient temperature, for example, together with the furnace or after removal from the furnace, covered with asbestos mats or high-temperature fabric, or cooled in hot sand. Arc welding can be performed with coated electrodes or in a carbon dioxide shield. When joining non-heat-affected parts, areas with lower strength properties than the steel being joined will occur in the heat-affected zones of the welding process. Restoring the proper properties in these zones depends on the heat treatment applied.
Welding
37HS steel can be welded electrically, by resistance, or by friction. For resistance welding, optimal parameters should be selected within narrower ranges than those used for welding low-carbon steels. The steel can be welded in the quenched and tempered or soft-annealed condition. The resulting joints can have mechanical properties similar to those of steel welded without or after heat treatment.
Cutting
37HS steel can be cut with an oxy-acetylene or propane-butane flame, or with an arc plasma jet. Before cutting, the steel should be preheated to a temperature of 250-300 ° C. Cut surfaces should be cooled in still air. This steel grade is used in the heat-treated condition. The medium hardenability of this steel allows for the best mechanical properties in sections up to approximately 60 mm thick when quenched in oil. The steel is prone to brittleness after tempering.
